Lakeland vs. Garden City preview

Field hockey fans can very well be treated to the Class B state championship game with the Lakeland-Garden City semifinal.

Two of New York State’s premier programs will open final four weekend 9:30 a.m. Friday at Vestal High School. The other Class B semi will match Maine-Endwell (Section 4) and Amherst (Section 6) at 11:30 a.m. The winners will meet for the state title Saturday, 10 a.m.

Lakeland has won two state championships this decade (2003 and ’06) and was a state finalist in 2007. Garden City (Section 8) won state titles in 2005, ’06 and ’08. It lost to Rye, 1-0 in double overtime in the 2007 final as Olivia Nabhan scored the game-winner on a pass from Colleen Carey. Garden City also reached the state final in 2001. Overall, Garden City leads all Long Island schools with six state crowns.

Lakeland, 20-0-1 on the season, and Garden City met for the 1998 Class B state title, won by Garden City, 1-0 in overtime.

“As good as we’ve been, they’ve been just as good on their side,” Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen said. “Certain programs have a readition of excellence. Greene and Garden City are two that have it.”

Lakeland has been a machine, scoring at will and limiting teams to few, if any shots. Megan Bozek and Nikki Schultz have been the Hornets’ creative forces, enabling sophomore forwards Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli to reap the benefits. Defensively, Jillian Caffrey, Bridget McGovern, Chelsea Remling and Alex Fitzpatrick have been an impenetrable barrier.

Remling has been excellent since Sarsen moved the junior from left midfield to right back. Remling has enabled Lakeland to balance the field and add another fine stick to move the ball out of the defensive zone and up the field to either Megan Bozek or Nikki Schultz.

Garden City enters the game with a 19-1 record. The Trojans’ blemish came at the hands of Garden City, 1-0. Garden City advanced to the final four beating Section 11 champion Shoreham-Wading River, 3-1 in the Long Island title game as back Katie Harrington scored two goals.

Even though the two teams did not play during the regular season, Sarsen and Lakeland know Garden City well. Sarsen coached many of the Garden City players in the Futures program and many Lakeland players teamed up with Garden City players in tournaments.

“I know Mariah Pewarski is going to play at Harvard, Eleni Andromidas is going to Boston College and I’m not sure where Katie Harrington is going,” Sarsen said.

This does help Lakeland prepare, but Sarsen understands it will come down to her team excecuting the game plan.

“It comes down to being clean, smart and patient with our tackles in our defnsive third,” Sarsen said. “We also have to limit their corner oportunities. To win a state championship, you have to beat a state champion.”
