Saturday Class A quarterfinal results

The following are the results of the Section 1 Class A quarterfinals played today:

Lely DeSimone converted an Allie Califano pass with 1:42 remaining in overtime as top-seeded Suffern averted the upset bid of eighth-seeded Mahopac with a 1-0 victory.

Suffern, who remained unbeaten, will host fourth-seeded John Jay-East Fishkill in a Class A semifinal Wednesday.

Toni Pjetri made six saves for Suffern while Mahopac’s Kaitlin McCormack also handled six saves.

No. 2 Mamaroneck 2, No. 7 Fox Lane 0: Caroline Clark and Jessica Leddy scored and Katie Stuntz stopped two shots as the Tigers registered their 16th shutout of the season. Mamaroneck will host No. 3 Ossining in a semifinal Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. at Flint Park in Larchmont. Jenn Pollock made 10 saves for Fox Lane.

No. 4 John Jay-East Fishkill 5, No. 5 John Jay (Cross River) 2: Carly Grimaudo scored two minutes into the second half, triggering a four-goal outburst. Grimaudo also had two assists in the second half. Jessica Sanchez scored twice in the second half and Allie Elmes also scored. Krista Kellogg had a goal in the first half and two assists in the second half. Danagh Evarts had a goal and assisted on a Krissy Gritz goal for the fifth seed. Cassie Durland (John Jay-EF) and Dayna Mercer (John Jay-Cross River) each made eight saves. John Jay-EF coach Barbara Deppe credited her defense of Jade Dennett, Jamie Raccosta, Jules Poggiogalle, Katie Warren and Durland with an outstanding day.

Friday Class B quarterfinal results

The following are results from the Section 1 Class B quarterfinal-round games today. Thank you coaches for emailing me your results.

Joanna Chalsen scored a goal in the first half and assisted on Melissa Colton’s goal in the second half as third-seeded Briarcliff defeated sixth-seeded Nyack, 2-0 in a Section 1 Class B quarterfinal-round game at Briarcliff.

Briarcliff will play at second-seeded Rye in a semifinal Tuesday.

Chalsen opened the scoring 3:12 into the game with the assist going to Kristiana Roth. Colton doubled the lead with 10:42 remaining in the game, set up by Chalsen.

Victoria Trentini made 10 saves for Briarcliff and Brianna Brickman had eight saves for Nyack.

Pleasantville 2, Brewster 1: Emily Munier and Liz King scored in the first half for the fourth-seeded Panthers. Jill Sue and Megan Tobiasen had the Pleasantville assists and goalie Rebecca Moore made five saves. Erin Taylor had the fifh seed’s goal with 5:18 remaining in the game. Kristen Cartledge stopped six shots for Brewster. Pleasantville will play at No. 1 Lakeland in a semifinal Tuesday.

Rye 7, Panas 1: Torie Stearns had a natural hat trick, the first three goals of the game, and Emma Brinkman had a hat trick in the second half. Stearns registered her goals in a six-minute span. Mallory Little also scored a goal. Olivia Nabhan, Michelle Mulhearn and Brittany McCormick had assists, as did Stearns and Brinkman. Bridget Stokes scored for seventh-seeded Panas. Second-seeded Rye will host third-seeded Briarcliff in a semifinal Tuesday.

Lakeland 8, Harrison 0: Emma Bozek had four goals and Megan Bozek contributed two goals and an assist as the top-seeded Hornets remained unbeaten. Shannon Scavelli scored and assisted on three goals and Bridget McGovern also tallied a goal. Leanne Goldblatt handed out two assists and Nikki Schultz and Jillian Caffrey had an assist apiece. Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen noted that back Chelsea Remling made a goal-line save with three minutes in the game to preserve the shutout. Amanda DiDomizio (37 minutes, no saves) and Krista Servedio (23 minutes) combined for five saves. Harrison’s Samantha Stump made 16 saves. Lakeland will host No. 4 Pleasantville in a semifinal Tuesday.

Thursday’s sectional results/schedule (Update)

Class A

First round

No. 1 Suffern 4, No. 16 Yorktown 0: Lindsay Cohen had two goals and an assist and Nicolle Villari had a goal and an assist. Allie Califano netted a goal and Danielle Conklin collected two assists. Toni Pjetri had three saves for Suffern and Yorktown’s Bridget Sickles made eight saves. Suffern will host the winner of No. 9 Arlington-No. 8 Mahopac in a quarterfinal Saturday, at a time to be determined.

 No. 8 Mahopac 1, No. 9 Arlington 0

No. 5 John Jay (Cross River) 3, No. 12 RC Ketcham 0: Sarah Lang scored two goals and Chloe Many added a goal as the fifth seed tallied its goals in the game’s final 13 minutes. Casey Bocklet assisted on the three goals. Dayna Mercer was not called on to make a save for the victors. John Jay will travel to John Jay-East Fishkill Saturday in a quarterfinal game.

No. 4 John Jay-East Fishkill 1, No. 13 Carmel 0: Krista Kellogg finished off a Jade Dennett pass with 2:38 remaining in the first half. The Patriots will host No. 5 John Jay (Cross River) in a quarterfinal Saturday.

No. 3 Scarsdale 3, No. 14 Clarkstown South 1

No. 11 White Plains at No. 6 Ossining

No. 7 Fox Lane 3, No. 10 North Rockland 1: Nellie Mitchell scored twice in the second half, including the tie-breaker on a penalty stroke with nine minutes remaining. Allison Lombardi gave Fox Lane a 1-0 lead in the first half, assisted by Lindsay Toppe. Allie Agins assited on Mitchell’s second goal. Melissa Carey had North Rockland’s goal, assisted by Lauren Moore. Jenn Pollock had two saves for Fox Lane and Anna Berman made 13 saves for North Rockland. Fox Lane will play second-seeded Mamaroneck in a quarterfnal game Saturday, 11 a.m. at Flint Park in Larchmont.

No. 2 Mamaroneck 4, No. 15 Horace Greely 0: The 2008 Section 1 champions received two goals from Heather Noto and a goal each from Nicole Merigliano and Caroline Clark. Katie Stuntz made two saves to record her 15th shutout of the season. Sarah Steinhorn stopped six shots for Greeley. Mamaronck will host seventh-seeded Fox Lane in a quartefinal game Saturday, 11 a.m. at Flint Park in Larchmont.

Class B

First round

No. 9 Harrison 3, No. 8 Hen Hud 1: Johnna Valentzas, Nicole Barletta and Sofie San Marco scored and Melissa Schulman had two assists. Jillian Tiburzi also had an assist as Harrison registered its first sectional win during coach Sara Gonzalez’s tenure and a program first in at least 10 years. Harrison will travel to top-seeded Lakeland in a quarterfinal game Saturday. Gonzalez played for Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen and is also Sarsen’s assistant on the Hudson Valley scholastic women’s field hockey team.

I apologize for not posting results last night but I did not hear from the winning coach in either game.

Each season whether it was field hockey, wrestling or softball, I often made selections when it came to sectionals. Enough of always hearing from me. Let me know your predictions on sectionals in the respective classes.

Sectional seeding meeting Monday (10/26)

The Section 1 field hockey championships seeding meeting will be Monday (10/26), 9:30 a.m. Briarcliff coach Kelly Adams has promised me she will call me with the seeds (Thank you Coach Adams). Hopefully, I will have everything posted prior to my team’s game Monday.

I think the top two seeds in the respective classes are as obvious as the lack of hair on my head. Please correct me if you think I am wrong:

Class A: 1. Suffern; 2. Mamaroneck. This could be the other way around also.

Class B: 1. Lakeland; 2. Rye.

Class C: 1. Bronxville; 2. Putnam Valley.

Rye, Mamaroneck and North Salem win

Torie Stearns scored her second goal of the game in the second half lifting Rye to a 2-1 victory over Fox Lane in the final regular-season game for both teams.

Olivia Nabhan assisted on the decisive goal. Stearns converted a penalty stroke in the first half. Kaitlin Campbell did not make a save for Rye.

Lindsay Toppe evened the score at 1-1 in the first half for Fox Lane, assisted by Nellie Mitchell. Jenn Pollock had six saves.

Mamaroneck 6, White Plains 0: Nicole Merigliano scored twice and Jillian Richards had a goal and assisted on three other scores in Mamaroneck’s final game of the regular season. Heathre Noto, Madeleine Despins and Mari Crawford also had goals and Jessica Gardiner registered two assists. Katie Stuntz made one save and White Plains’ goalie Rachel Pearl had nine saves.

North Salem 4, Croton 0: Liz Holt and Liz Raskopf each had a goal and an assist on Senior Day and their last regular-season home game. Kaitlyn Bond and Michelle Teplensky scored goals and Meghan Palotta had an assist as the victors conclude with an 8-5-3 record and sectional berth. Lizetta Solarik had no saves in 50 minutes and Jess Caputo one in her time. Croton’s Erin Flaherty made 21 saves.

Sectional qualifiers (Updated, Sunday)

White Plains (5-6-5) – Coach Joan Behrends said she petitioned for sectionals.

John Jay (Cross River) – (10-2-3)

Fox Lane (7-6-3) – Allison Lombardi and Allie Agins each had a goal an assist as the Foxes beat Somers Thursday, 4-0. Nellie Mitchell and Jackie Gigante also scored goals.

Scarsdale (10-1-5)

Clarkstown South (5-5-6)

Yorktown (4-12)

Class B: 2008 Section 1 Champ – Putnam Valley

Briarcliff (11-3-2)

Lakeland (15-0-1) – The Hornets beat Carmel Thursday, 9-0 as Emma Bozek had a hat trick and Megan Bozek scored twice and recorded two assists. Jillian Caffrey and Shannon Scavelli each had a goal and an assist and Nikki Schultz set up two goals.

Pleasantville (8-7-1)

Nanuet (4-8-4) – Coach Karen Leitner told me this was Nanuet’s first sectional berth since 2000.

Harrison (5-9-2) – Coach Sara Gonzalez let me know that this is Harrison’s first sectional berth in many years.
